Eternal Summers — previously a duo of Nicole Yun and Daniel Cundiff, more recently fleshed out with the addition of bassist Jonathan Woods — are a band coming into their own. While previous releases explored post punk and lo-fi rock territory, their current power trio format pushes things solidly into its own territory, crafting a unique pop sound that’s entirely their own. The band is currently running a Pledge Music campaign, offering everything from vinyl pre-orders to sweaty shirts and house shows in order to facilitate the production of their new album.

OK I’m on a bit of a re-blogging kick on this Friday afternoon. I just could not resist this amazing trading card image of Jonathan Richman courtesy of deafrace2000 on Tumblr. Has there ever been a more adorable and entertaining man with a guitar? Me thinks…no! But wow I have never seen that youthful smile sporting a sweet ‘stache before.

Check out two vintage BEB clips of JR from Valentine’s Day 2010. I caught him performing his classic “Pablo Picasso” as well as my previously un-posted clip for “Because Her Beauty Is Raw & Wild.”

A little while back, I was compiling a playlist of ’60s hits in Spotify. The song I started with was “This Diamond Ring,” a 1965 single by Gary Lewis and the Playboys. About 20 instances of the song showed up when I searched for it—some of them on Gary Lewis best-of collections, some on compilations like ’60s Jukebox Hits and 60 Hits of the 60s. Clicking on one at random, I soon noticed that something was off. The vocals sounded strange—was that even Gary Lewis singing? And the snare drum was a very upfront, ’80s-style THWACK, a sound created using “gated reverb,” a studio effect that didn’t exist in the ’60s..

Pretty great article about this longstanding practice and how the celestial jukebox has made the confusion visible. Usually you wouldn’t find the re-recordings in standard record stores, they’d only turn up in truck stops and places like that. On Spotify, though, they’re presented to the consumer as functionally equal to the originals.
